The “Hunter-Gratzner” space transport vessel with 40 people aboard crashes when the ship is hit in a meteor storm on a desert planet.
There are only 11 survivors, including pilot Carolyn Fry (who took command after the ship’s captain was killed), bounty hunter William J.
Johns, religious man Abu Al-Walid, antique dealer Paris P. Ogilvie,
runaway teenager Jack, settlers John ‘Zeke’ Ezekiel and his lover Sharon ‘Shazza’ Montgomery, and dangerous escaped convict Richard B. Riddick, among others.
Marooned, the survivors find that the sunshine from three suns is barren and hot desert-scape is.
Not only do they have to find food and water and worry about Riddick,
the survivors find themselves pursued by the flesh-eating alien inhabitants of the earth when the world is engulfed in darkness,
which occurs every 22 years, when they emerge from the underground to search and consume all the signs of life.
Fry and the survivors think Riddick is their best hope of survival, as Riddick has healed surgically.
