Because of his chronic health difficulties, Gabonese captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is scheduled to return to Arsenal early from the Africa Cup of Nations.
After capturing Covid in the build-up to the competition, the Arsenal striker has not played for Gabon in Cameroon.
He was absent from Gabon’s matches against Comoros and Ghana on Friday, according to claims from the country’s medical personnel, who said he was suffering from ‘heart lesions’ as a result of his Covid diagnosis.
According to The Athletic, Aubameyang could return to the United Kingdom this week after his condition is assessed.
However, the publication says, Monday will be crucial in determining the former Arsenal captain’s plans, with meetings and tests planned to determine whether he will be fit to play on Tuesday or beyond if Gabon advances.
Aubameyang has spoken with Arsenal’s team medics, who are unconcerned about the situation.
After a series of disciplinary concerns, the 32-year-old was stripped of his Arsenal captaincy before traveling to Cameroon.
He was later photographed with former Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina on a night out in Dubai prior of the competition.
