Reports of a nationwide grid failure on Saturday have been denied by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which blames isolated line trippings for power blackout in some areas of the nation.

TCN spokeswoman Ndidi Mbah emphasised in a statement that the outages were localised and mainly affected the bulk power supply to the Lagos axis.

According to Mbah, the problem started at 1:41 PM when the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, which caused the Benin-Omotosho line to trip as well.

Operations at five significant power plants—Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras—were affected by this interruption. Although these facilities now have electricity again, as of Saturday night, work was still being done to fully restore the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line.

“Earlier today, at about 13:41 hrs, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line. These consequently affected bulk supply only on the Lagos axis,” Mbah stated.

The national grid was still up and running, she added, adding that overall power generation was 4,335.63 MW prior to the tripping and only decreased to 2,573.23 MW following the incident.

This explanation coincides with growing public anxiety over ongoing power outages, as numerous Nigerians bemoan the frequent interruptions in the delivery of electricity.
